These days, if you want to watch a horror movie, you have a plethora of streaming platforms available. So why should you spend your time searching on HBO Max?
HBO Max is a great choice for watching horror movies online. The service added new movies in October, such as Bring Her Back and The Substance, which is in addition to the 19 fantastic options we’ve listed below. The streaming service costs from $10 per month or $100 per year, and you can also get it for free with the DoorDash DashPass annual plan.
Hereditary (2018)
This is one of those movies you shouldn’t watch alone. Ari Aster’s directorial debut, about what a family discovers after their mother’s death, might be the scariest movie on this list. If you’re in the mood for a disturbing film with brilliant performances, proceed with caution when watching Hereditary.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Choosing the horror movie A Nightmare on Elm Street is a safe bet. This iconic 80s slasher film from Wes Craven, along with most of its sequels, is streaming on HBO Max, so you might be in for a marathon. The first film follows a teenager named Nancy Thompson and her friends who begin to dream of a man — a disfigured and tattered villain who keeps blades on one hand. Get ready to watch and good luck being able to sleep tonight.
Companion (2025)
Companion is a horror movie that you should watch quickly and not Google too much about. It’s smart, unsettling, and thrilling, and features great performances from Sophie Thatcher of Yellowjackets and Jack Quaid of The Boys. Made by the filmmakers behind Barbarian (2022), Companion raises the bar for horror movies in 2025.
The Witch (2015)
This historical horror film almost guarantees nightmares. The unsettling film focuses on a family in 1630s New England and marks the film debut of Anya Taylor-Joy. During the 90-minute film, strange and shocking things happen to a farmer, his wife, and their five children who move to a remote area on the edge of a forest.
If you’re still looking for a horror movie, you can’t go wrong with The Shining, the brilliant Stanley Kubrick film starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. In this adaptation of a Stephen King novel, a writer (Nicholson) who stays with his family in a remote hotel shows some disturbing changes in his behavior. This one will definitely satisfy your horror cravings.
Random Acts of Violence (2025)
Michael B. Jordan plays two main roles in this genre-bending film from Ryan Coogler (Creed, Black Panther). Random Acts of Violence is a box office hit, but if you haven’t already spent time with Smoke and Stack (or missed the after-credits scenes in theaters), now is your chance to watch it on streaming.
Final Destination: Bloodlines (2025)
Final Destination: Bloodlines is the first film in the franchise in the last 14 years, and it won’t be the last — another entry is in the works with the writer of Bloodlines. Bloodlines brings a sense of freshness to the audience while showcasing the glamorous killings, prophecies, and attempts to outwit death in the series.
Get Out (2017)
Jordan Peele’s directorial debut was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture, Director, and Actor, and won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The twisting psychological horror film stars Daniel Kaluuya as Chris, a black man who unknowingly enters danger when he meets his white girlfriend’s family.
Pearl (2022)
The slasher film starring Mia Goth, called Pearl, is a prequel to Ti West’s film X, which focuses on a younger version of the older villain in that film. HBO Max features the films X, Pearl, and a third film in the series, but I suggest watching Pearl if you only have the chance to see one film.
Evil Dead Rise (2023)
A family accidentally discovers some unimaginable evils in this bloody supernatural horror story. This film is the fifth installment in the franchise, following The Evil Dead (1981), Evil Dead 2 (1987), Army of Darkness (1992), and Evil Dead (2013).
